NASW Oregon Honors Paul Giancarlo with Social Worker of Year Award
March 16, 2012
Portland, Ore.—Paul Giancarlo has been named Social Worker of the Year by the NASW Oregon Chapter for his leadership and contributions as co-founder of the Ashland Food Project (AFP). The program helps feed hungry families by making it easy for residents to donate food.
Recognizing that many neighbors wanted to help fight hunger in their community, but for one reason or another never got around to it, the AFP was created to provide a simple, door to door food collection system by volunteer neighborhood coordinators. The volunteers distribute green AFP bags to those who wish to participate. Every two months the volunteers pick up the bags of food and take them to the emergency food bank.
When the project started in 2009, it had a core group of 10 volunteers. By 2010, it had over 150 volunteers in three different towns: Ashland, Talent and Medford. The first pickup in 2009 netted about 600 pounds of food. By August 2011, AFP was picking up more than 36,000 pounds county-wide, every two months.
Besides providing food for the hungry, the project created new neighborhood connections, strengthened the community and provided a model to other communities. For more information, visit the AFP web site at http://www.ashlandfoodproject.com.
