Hearing voices is one of the most common experiences that people diagnosed with a psychotic illness have. Research has shown that many people continue to hear voices even after prolonged use of medication. This has meant that many voice hearers do not get relief from their experiences. The consequence of this is that many people live lives that are low in quality & high in distress. This one-day workshop has been designed to help practitioners understand the experience of hearing voices and interventions that can be used to enable the voice hearer take control of their experience. As a result of this training, individuals will know how to develop an in depth understanding of people’s voice hearing experience & will be able to use proven tools to help individuals develop successful coping strategies.
Presenters:
Ron Coleman is a mental health trainer and consultant specializing in psychosis prevention and resolution. He has designed training packages to enable voice hearers to gain ascendancy over the negative aspects of the voice hearing experience. His own route to recovery after spending 13 years in & out of the psychiatric system has given him many insights into the many difficult issues facing today’s mental health services. Ron has published several books including “Politics of the Madhouse” and “Recovery: an Alien Concept?” He also co –authored “Working with Voices” & “Working to Recovery.”
Paul Baker is a community development and group worker. He has a Post-graduate Diploma in Community Education, specializing in working with young people and people with mental health problems. Paul has worked in the health care and education sectors for the last 30 years. He had the responsibility to develop innovative mental health care services in the community including services run by the people who use them, self-advocacy services, supported housing services, social firms and enterprises as well as the development of forums for people to enable them to have a direct input in the development and running of services. Paul was one of the founding members of the Hearing Voices Network in England and is currently the coordinator of INTERVOICE, the influential coordinating body for the international hearing voices movement.

“With a fearless look at a highly charged subject, Straightlaced unearths how popular pressures around gender and sexuality are confining American teens. Their stories reflect a diversity of experiences, demonstrating how gender role expectations and homophobia are interwoven, and illustrating the different ways that these expectations connect with culture, race and class”
The 67 minute documentary Straightlaced will be shown followed by an hour long facilitated discussion. The discussion will focus on how youth are effected by homophobia and the harmfulness of LGBTQ discrimination for all individuals. The Oregon Safe Schools Act will be explained and social workers will be informed as to how they can support its implementation. The Oregon Safe Schools Act strengthens anti‐bullying policies in public schools to ensure that every school in every district provides a safe environment for all students.
Facilitators will be Jenn Burleton, director of Transactive, and Sally Stevens, LCSW, and Zena Britadesco, board members of the Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition.

Could our drug-based paradigm of psychiatric care be fueling a modern-day plague of mental illness? What would a truly humane mental health system look like? Journalist Robert Whitaker’s controversial book “Anatomy of an Epidemic” has inspired Oregon leaders in the mental health field to question present practices and initiate major reforms. At 7 p.m., Thursday, February 10, 2011 at the First Unitarian Church in downtown Portland, Whitaker and a panel of mental health providers and peers will share their perspectives and plans to create a more compassionate mental health system in Oregon and across the nation.
While it is generally accepted that psychiatry has made great progress in diagnosing and treating mental disorders in recent years, in reality, mental illness is taking an ever-greater toll on our society. “Study after study shows that overall medicated patients fare worse than those who were not medicated,” says Whitaker, “Yet the psychiatric community and pharmaceutical companies have systematically kept these results hidden from the public.”
The number of people on government disability due to a mental illness has tripled during the past twenty years and the number of disabled mentally ill children has risen 35-fold during this period. At the same time, pharmaceutical industry profits have soared. Panel members will discuss the painful realities of modern psychiatric care and the need for change. The discussion will include a look at the peer movement that encourages people with mental health challenges to direct their own treatment. Whitaker plans to highlight alternatives like European programs that use psychiatric drugs in a selective, cautious manner, and produce very good results.
Following this event, on February 11 and 12, mental health experts and policy-makers from around the nation will meet in Portland. Inspired by Whitaker’s research, the group plans to develop and propose protocols for the optimized usage of psychotropic medication in Oregon’s mental health system. The gathering will work to significantly impact mental health care here in the Pacific Northwest and across the United States.

As a journalist writing about mental health, Robert Whitaker won a George Polk award for medical writing and a National Association of Science Writer’s award for best magazine article. A series he co- wrote for the Boston Globe was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in public service. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

In partnership with the NASW Oregon Chapter, PSU School of Social Work, ASL World, ASL Book Club, and the PSU ASL program, we wish to invite you to an evening lecture with Carl Shroeder.
WHAT:
The philosophy of the Deaf is a quaint little mirror of the history of humanity. A million years or so have passed since Deaf people made their appearance in life. During this time, they have learned to use signed language for information, communication, and cognitive development. The details of this process are still unknown today; they are still like philosophical shadows, dancing on a cave wall somewhere, bringing us into the realm of social speculation. And of these facts is this: Since 1965, American Sign Language (ASL) has been reluctantly examined as a fully-fledged lanugage of the Deaf that is sight-oriented, not sound-oriented. Signed, not spoken.
ABOUT THE LECTURER:
Carl Shroeder was born Deaf in The Hauge, The Netherlands, in 1952. Until 1963, he acquired Gebarentaal (Dutch Sign Language) and the Dutch language. After his parents moved to the United States, Shroeder began to experience language changes, from Gebarentaal to American Sign Language and from Dutch to English. Today he is a Ph.D candidate at Capella University, pursuing college teaching and American Sign Language. He has been on a lecture tour around the world. Philosophy is one of his side interests; another is linguistics. He received four straight A’s in college French!

Providing Services in Complex Times: Working with Clients Living with HIV/AIDS and Co-occurring Mental Health Disorders. This workshop will look at HIV/AIDS within a bio-psycho-social-spiritual perspective, and will include a brief overview of psycho-social issues of HIV disease progression, including adherence issues. Participants will also increase their skills in identifying and distinguishing client/consumer’s common psychological reactions to living with HIV/AIDS from those that warrant a mental health diagnosis; discuss dual and multiples diagnoses; and be able to differentiate mental health disorders from neuro-psychiatric complications. Participants will draw upon both knowledge and skills to practice culturally competent assessment and intervention planning including both the micro and macro levels. National and state resources will also be reviewed. The workshop is for social workers serving diverse groups of clients/consumers across the range of practice settings and who are experienced HIV/AIDS providers with a basic understanding of mental health disorders and diagnosis.

Ethical Considerations in Documentation
Documentation of clinical or forensic sessions is critical to providing quality services to your clients as well as managing risk. This segment will cover a variety of ethical issues that arise when documenting your sessions with clients. It will include what information to include in your documentation as well as what not to include and what to do if your client asks you not to document any of the session. It will also cover how to avoid ethical issues when there is more than one client in your session, or if non-clients attend your sessions. Also, it will cover ethical issues relating to new legislation, new administrative rules and important issues to address in your documentation, including fee agreements, informed consents, authorizations and requests for your records.
Ethical Considerations in Abuse Reporting
Balancing the privacy rights of your clients with the duty to report abuse is often challenging. This segment will cover ethical issues arising in reporting child abuse, elder abuse, domestic violence and abuse involving developmentally disabled individuals. This will also cover new legislation requiring social workers to report other healthcare providers who engage in unprofessional or prohibited conduct.
Ethics and Board Complaints
Ethical problems may develop into complaints to the Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers. This segment will cover the most common Board complaints, what to do when a complaint is received, how to avoid creating new ethical problems while responding to the Board, including what information may or may not be given to the Board and your ethical obligations to cooperate with Board investigations.

This workshop will examine key ethical issues of the effects that conservative religious views have on gay and lesbian clients and on the social service practitioners who work with them. Many lesbian and gay clients who come from conservative religious backgrounds are still religious, and religious organizations are prevalent in their communities. For these individuals, their religious background may keep them from completing the coming out process. This workshop discusses how many individuals cope with this conflict, providing a hopeful model for those still struggling. Attendees will receive the book, Effects of Conservative Religion on Lesbian and Gay Clients and Practitioners: Practice Implications by Ski Hunter. It has chapters on working with lesbian and gay people who have little or no openness to a lesbian or gay identity, a group distinct from those who are open to a lesbian and gay identity and one that needs to be addressed in a different way.Social workers who grow up in conservative religious environments can experience difficulties themselves—and create difficulties for those they serve—if they bring their religious views of lesbian and gay people into practice with them. To move toward affirmative work with lesbian and gay clients, they must be transformed. To date, little empirical work on how to change such practitioners has been done, but this workshop will deal with the struggles that these practitioners face and attendees will leave with a book that has information presenting an important, novel program to transform heterosexist practitioners.

The mind is far more mysterious than a label or a diagnosis could ever encompass. In this workshop we will discover the gifts of sensitivity, creativity, and spirituality that are intertwined with what gets called a disorder. Discussion, demonstrations, and experiential exercises will introduce a Process Oriented way to live and work with the meaning behind extreme states of consciousness. Everyone is welcome at this inclusive workshop: professionals, those interested in Process Work, people with diagnosis and/or extreme states, anyone taking or not taking medications, family members, and the community.
Co-teachers Will Hall and Myriam Rahman offer a unique personal perspective on hospitalization, diagnosis, and medication.
Will Hall, MA, DiplPW, has recovered from a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Director of Portland Hearing Voices, Will hosts Madness Radio on KBOO and teaches internationally on new approaches to madness and extreme states. Myriam Rahman, MA, DiplPW, teaches internationally and is a trainer and consultant with Portland Hearing Voices. Myriam is a survivor of a diagnosis of bipolar disorder w/ psychosis and uses her experience of recovery in her work as a therapist and facilitator.
