Featured Speakers: Juan Melendez-Colon and AbaGayle
It is hard for anyone to imagine spending seventeen years, eight months and one day on death row for a crime he did not commit. And, that is exactly the story that Juan Melendez-Colon will tell when he speaks on Wednesday April 14th, 7PM, at the First Unitarian Church in downtown Portland. Mr. Melendez, one of 139 people exonerated for capital crimes they did not commit, will be the featured speaker. Joining Mr. Melendez-Colon, on the program will be AbaGayle, the mother of a daughter murdered in California. Following the talks by Mr. Melendez-Colon and AbaGayle, there will be a question and answer forum allowing people in the audience to voice their positions on the death penalty and ways that Oregon might consider improvements to the criminal justice system. The public is invited and a “free-will” offering can be made to support this event and the continuing work of Mr. Melendez, who is a member of the Witness to Innocence program, made up of exonerated individuals from across the country.
This event is sponsored by the Lewis & Clark Law School, the Partnership for Safety and Justice, the Portland Chapter of National Lawyers Guild, and Oregonians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (OADP).
